On this week’s episode of Lever Time Premium, exclusively for The Lever’s supporting subscribers, producer Frank Cappello is joined by Nikhil Goyal, sociologist, educator, and former senior advisor to Senator Bernie Sanders, to discuss his new book Live to See the Day: Coming Of Age In American Poverty.
The book chronicles the lives of three Puerto Rican teenagers growing up in one of Philadelphia’s poorest neighborhoods, and explores the failures of America’s public education and welfare systems through lived experience. On the show, Goyal discusses the “school choice” movement, which has largely become a vehicle for corporate interests to siphon money from taxpayers — and the tangible policy solutions that could help lift millions of children out of poverty.
